1. Análise das mudanças na extensão do gelo marinho antártico e ártico entre 1979 e 2007 e sua relação com a variabilidade climática global. / Changes in arctic and antartic sea ice extent between 1979 and 2007 and its relationship to global climate variability.

2. Potenciais influências de anomalias positivas e negativas na camada de gelo marinho no mar de Ross na circulação atmosférica do Hemisfério Sul / Potential influences on the southern hemisphere atmospheric circulation of negative and positive sea ice extension anomalies in the ross sea
This study have used the CPTEC/INPE AGCM to explore the role of sea ice extent in the Ross Sea as a forcing of the asymmetric atmospheric circulation in the southern hemisphere during the austral winter (July-September), on a seasonal scale. The impacts have been assessed from the standpoint of positive and negative observed anomalies in ice extent in the Ro

3. A Concentração de sódio no testemunho de gelo da Ilha James Ross como indicador da variabilidade da extensão do gelo marinho
This dissertation investigates the relationship between the sodium concentration in an ice core (D98) from James Ross Island (Antarctica) and the area covered by sea ice in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas during the 1979¿1991 period. The D98 total sodium content derives from samples analyzed by Joseph McConnell (McConnell et al., 2007). Sea ice coverag

4. Numerical Assessment of the Ross Sea Water Masses Variability in the 20 th and 21 st Centuries / Estudo numérico da variabilidade das massas de água do Mar de Ross nos séculos XX e XXI

5. Relation between the Antarctic Sea ice concentration and low temperatures in South America / Relação entre a concentração de gelo marinho Antártico e a temperatura mínima na América do Sul
The Antarctic Sea Ice Concentration (ASIC) is thought to be an important element in the analysis of the world climate. However, few studies have investigated its relation to other climatic elements. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify the relation between the ASIC and low temperatures in South America through two approaches. The first, regional, invest

6. Critérios competitivos e manutenção de relacionamento entre fornecedores de transporte marítimo internacional e exportadores do Rio Grande do Sul
Logistics operations play an important role in international business. At the same time, exports are a major driver in the Brazilian economy policies. As exportation rates have increased quickly in the last years, companies have been compelled to seek cost reduction, quality improvements and client satisfaction. Thus, this study aimed to identify competitive

7. Characterization of Protistan Assemblages in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis†
The diversity of protistan assemblages has traditionally been studied using microscopy and morphological characterization, but these methods are often inadequate for ecological studies of these communities because most small protists inherently lack adequate taxonomic characters to facilitate their identification at the species level and many protistan speci

8. Widespread Distribution in Polar Oceans of a 16S rRNA Gene Sequence with Affinity to Nitrosospira-Like Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria
We analyzed the phylogenetic compositions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria of the β subclass of Proteobacteria from 42 Southern Ocean samples. We found a Nitrosospira-like 16S rRNA gene sequence in all 20 samples that yielded PCR products (8 of 30 samples from the Ross Sea and 12 of 12 samples from the Palmer Peninsula). We also found this sequence in Arctic O

9. Human Antibodies to Bacterial Superantigens and Their Ability To Inhibit T-Cell Activation and Lethality
Bacterial superantigens (BSAgs) cause massive stimulation of the immune system and are associated with various pathologies and diseases. To address the role of antibodies in protection against BSAgs, we screened the sera of 29 human volunteers for antibodies to the SAgs staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA), SEB, SEC1, and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1).

10. Enzymatic Activity, Bacterial Distribution, and Organic Matter Composition in Sediments of the Ross Sea (Antarctica)
Enzymatic activities of aminopeptidase and β-glucosidase were investigated in Antarctic Ross Sea sediments at two sites (sites B and C, 567 and 439 m deep, respectively). The sites differed in trophic conditions related to organic matter (OM) composition and bacterial distribution. Carbohydrate concentrations at site B were about double those at site C, whi

11. Wood-Destroying Soft Rot Fungi in the Historic Expedition Huts of Antarctica
Three expedition huts in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica, built between 1901 and 1911 by Robert F. Scott and Ernest Shackleton, sheltered and stored the supplies for up to 48 men for 3 years during their explorations and scientific investigation in the South Pole region. The huts, built with wood taken to Antarctica by the early explorers, have deteriorate
