2. Improved Fixation of Cellulose-Acetate Reverse-Osmosis Membrane for Scanning Electron Microscopy
Fixation of cellulose-acetate membranes with either glutaraldehyde-osmium tetroxide or glutaraldehyde-ruthenium tetroxide resulted in extensive electron beam damage. Beam damage was eliminated and the bacterial surface structure was preserved, however, when cellulose-acetate membranes were fixed with glutaraldehyderuthenium tetroxide and treated successively

3. Ultrastructural evidence of the existence of the surface connected canalicular system in the thrombocyte of the shark (Triakis scyllia).
The existence of the surface-connected canalicular system has been demonstrated ultrastructurally in shark [Triakis scyllia) thrombocytes using the ruthenium red method to fix and stain the glycocalyx. In ultrathin sections fixed routinely in glutaraldehyde followed by osmium tetroxide, numbers of electron-lucent vesicles are distributed throughout the cytop

4. Electron Microscopic Study of a Slime Layer
Slime layers are being studied in our laboratories in an attempt to understand their functions in the control of pollution in natural streams. A method for fixing, staining, and embedding microorganisms in the intact slime has been developed. In this method, epoxy resin discs are placed in a holder and are introduced into a simulated stream. After various pe

5. Endocytosis in the retinal and choroidal microcirculation.
The endocytosis of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by the vascular cells of retinal and choroidal blood vessels was compared in immersion and perfusion fixed eyes from individual rats. The mechanisms of endocytosis of HRP appeared identical in both retinal and choroidal vessels. The bulk of internalised tracer occurred in macropinosomes 300-400 nm in diameter.

7. Freeze-substitution of gram-negative eubacteria: general cell morphology and envelope profiles.
Freeze-substitution was performed on strains of Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, Campylobacter fetus, Vibrio cholerae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas putida, Aeromonas salmonicida, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae, Caulobacter crescentus, and Leptothrix discophora with a substitution medium composed of 2% osmium tetroxide and 2% u
