1. Germination test as a fast method to detect glyphosate-resistant sourgrass
The occurrence of weed species with different levels of resistance to glyphosate has increasingly spread in agricultural areas. In Brazil, sourgrass is among the main species presenting issues in this regard. Thus, fast and reliable methods to detect glyphosate resistance are of special interest for this specie, either for research or rational management pur

2. The effects of an exotic palm on a native palm during the first demographic stages: contributions to ecological management
Biological invasions have negative impacts on native biota and consequently on biodiversity. In patches of Atlantic Forest in Brazil, the Australian palm tree Archontophoenix cunninghamiana has become invasive, whereas the endemic palm Euterpe edulis is threatened with extinction. The two species occupy parts of the same functional niche within the forests,

4. Biological control of coffee rust / Controle biológico da ferrugem do cafeeiro
This thesis is part of a research program aiming to biocontrol coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix, Hv) in organically-grown coffee. Efficiency of bacterial isolates was compared in two plantations, during 3 years. Isolates B157 (Bacillus sp.) and P286 (Pseudomonas sp.) reduced disease intensity relative to the control; B157 was as efficient as copper hydroxide.

5. Variabilidade de cinco espécies arbóreas da região de cerrado do Brasil Central para medidas de germinação e emergência / Variability of five arboreous species of the Central Brazil cerrado region for germination and emergency measurements
Basic studies of seed germination and seedling emergence assume an important role within scientific researches due to the devastation and fragmentation of the native vegetation of the Cerrado. Thus, in the present study the processes of seed germination and seedling emergency were evaluated using the linear correlations among the measurements calculated for

7. Water defficit: osmotic agents and seed size study / Deficiência hídrica: estudo de agentes osmóticos e tamanho de sementes
The germination decreasing as a water deficit function is a wide spread occurrence in agricultural systems. This assay was divided in two steps. Firstly, the actions of different osmotic in the simulation of water deficit during germination were tested determining what is the most efficient. The second part was done using mannitol to determine the effect of

8. Potencial alelopatico de Wedelia glauca: efecto sobre especies hortícolas
Wedelia glauca (Asteraceae) popularly known as sunchillo, is a perennial weed widely spread in Argentina. Field observations show the existence of communities dominated by W. glauca, reducing the density of other associated herbaceous species. The objective of this work was to study the action of aqueous extracts of rhizome and leaves of W. glauca on the ger

9. Effects of nifedipine, metronidazole, and nitric oxide donors on spore germination and cell culture infection of the microsporidia Encephalitozoon hellem and Encephalitozoon intestinalis.
Two species of microsporidia, Encephalitozoon hellem and Encephalitozoon intestinalis, were isolated from AIDS patients and cultured in green monkey kidney cells. A spore germination assay and a cultured-cell infection assay were used to test the efficacy of candidate antiparasitic agents. The calcium channel blocker nifedipine, metronidazole, and two nitric

10. Aerial dispersal and drying of Peronospora tabacina conidia in tobacco shade tents
Blue mold of tobacco is caused by the fungus Peronospora tabacina. Its spores are released in the morning when the relative humidity falls, but they require free water for germination. Traditionally, the walls of the shade tents are raised to control the pathogen by drying leaves. We show that raising the walls does not materially speed drying. It does, howe

11. Cell Division and Subsequent Radicle Protrusion in Tomato Seeds Are Inhibited by Osmotic Stress But DNA Synthesis and Formation of Microtubular Cytoskeleton Are Not1
We studied cell cycle events in embryos of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv Moneymaker) seeds during imbibition in water and during osmoconditioning (“priming”) using both quantitative and cytological analysis of DNA synthesis and β-tubulin accumulation. Most embryonic nuclei of dry, untreated control seeds were arrested in the G1 phase of the c
