1. All-Optical Logic Gates Devices based on SPP Coupling between Graphene Sheets
Abstract The aim of this work is to propose all-optical logic gates based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPP's) coupling among spatially separated graphene sheets. This model consists of graphene nanoribbons embedded in silica (SiO2) substrate place in a distance such that allow an efficient coupling between the plasmonic modes of the waveguides. It was nume

2. Viscoelastic Substrates Effects on the Elimination or Reduction of the Sandwich Structures Oscillations Based on the Kelvin-Voigt Model
Abstract Effects of viscoelastic substrates on the sandwich structures oscillations are examined in this paper. In this regard, dynamic response of sandwich annular panels with FG polar orthotropic face sheets resting on viscoelastic substrate is presented. Young’s modulus in the radial and circumferential direction, shear modulus and density of each face

4. Characterization of a microvalve using the piezoelectric polymer poly(viniyidene fluoride) (PVDF) integrated to a micronozzle end / Caracterização de uma microválvula fabricada usando o polímero piezoelétrico poli(fluoreto de vinilideno) (PVDF) integrada a saída de um microbocal sônico
This work describes the fabrication and test of a microvalve integrated in a micronozzle. The technique used to fabricate the micronozzles was powder blasting using aluminum oxide powder and glass as substrate. The microvalves are actuators made from PVDF (poli(vinylidene fluoride)), that is a piezoelectric polymer. The micronozzles have convergent-divergent

5. Dichroic ratios in polarized Fourier transform infrared for nonaxial symmetry of beta-sheet structures.
The transition moments for the amide bands from beta-sheet peptide structures generally do not exhibit axial symmetry about the director in linearly polarized Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements on oriented systems. The angular dependences of the dichroic ratios of the amide bands are derived for beta-sheet structures in attenuated total reflectio

6. In situ atomic force microscopy study of Alzheimer’s β-amyloid peptide on different substrates: New insights into mechanism of β-sheet formation
We have applied in situ atomic force microscopy to directly observe the aggregation of Alzheimer’s β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) in contact with two model solid surfaces: hydrophilic mica and hydrophobic graphite. The time course of aggregation was followed by continuous imaging of surfaces remaining in contact with 10–500 μM solutions of Aβ in PBS (pH 7.4)

7. Human epidermal cell cultures: growth and differentiation in the absence of differentiation in the absence of dermal components or medium supplements.
Human epidermal cells grew and differentiated in vitro, provided that the pH of the culture medium was at 5.6-5.8, the seeding density was optimal (approximately 2.5 x 10(5) cells per cm2), and the incubation temperature was maintained at 35-37 degrees C. Under these conditions, epidermal cells from many different skin locations grew to confluency within 15-

8. Proximity of the substrate binding site and the heme-iron catalytic site in cytochrome P-450scc.
As an approach to "mapping" the active site of the cytochrome P-450 that catalyzes cholesterol side-chain cleavage, designated cytochrome P-450scc, we have synthesized steroid derivatives with the potential to interact with both the substrate binding site and the heme-iron catalytic site of the enzyme. The effects of these substrate analogs were studied with

9. High Resolution Detection of Mechanical Forces Exerted by Locomoting Fibroblasts on the Substrate
We have developed a new approach to detect mechanical forces exerted by locomoting fibroblasts on the substrate. Cells were cultured on elastic, collagen-coated polyacrylamide sheets embedded with 0.2-μm fluorescent beads. Forces exerted by the cell cause deformation of the substrate and displacement of the beads. By recording the position of beads during c

10. Rho overexpression leads to mitosis-associated detachment of cells from epithelial sheets: A link to the mechanism of cancer dissemination
Dissemination of neoplastic cells from the primary tumor (invasion and metastasis) is a fundamentally dangerous step in multistage carcinogenesis. Recent evidence suggests that Rho GTPase-mediated signaling is linked to dissemination of cells from several different types of human tumors. The Rho family of proteins is typically associated with the regulation

11. Rapid dot-immunobinding assay on nitrocellulose for viral antibodies.
A procedure is described for the routine laboratory diagnosis of viral serum antibodies. Antigens are dotted on nitrocellulose strips or sheets, and sera are applied on absorbent paper strips. Antigen-antibody complexes are detected with enzyme-conjugated antiglobulin and development of a colored, insoluble substrate product. The test allows processing of mu

12. Two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography for simultaneous detection of bacterial beta-lactam acylases and beta-lactamases.
A rapid and specific procedure was developed for the simultaneous detection of bacterial acylases and beta-lactamases, using ampicillin and cephalexin as substrates. Bacterial suspensions from agar plates were incubated separately with each beta-lactam substrate for 1 h at 37 degrees C. The supernatant of the reaction mixture was dansylated, and the dansyl d
