1. VALORIZATION OF SOLID WASTES FROM THE BREWERY AND BIODIESEL INDUSTRIES FOR THE BIOPRODUCTION OF NATURAL DYES
This study aims to assess a new approach for concomitant valorization of two industrial wastes - raw glycerin and spent brewer’s yeast - for the bioproduction of valuable carotenoids. Microbial pigments have numerous applications in the food and cosmetic industries. First, four cultures of yeasts were screened using pure glycerol and either (NH4)2SO4 or ur

2. Torularhodin and Torulene: Bioproduction, Properties and Prospective Applications in Food and Cosmetics - a Review
Torularhodin and torulene are two widespread microbial carotenoids with relatively few studies, as compared to other nutraceutical carotenoids such as β-carotene, lycopene and astaxanthin. Several genera of microorganisms produce it in high concentration (up to 0.1% of the cell dry weight), probably as a protection against photooxidation and free radicals.

3. Obtenção e propriedades de toruleno da levedura Rhodotorula glutinis / Obtaining and properties of torulene from Rhodotorula glutinis yeast
Carotenoids are natural colorants, some of which are precursors of vitamin A. Since the past decade, an important role in reducing the risk of various degenerative diseases was attributed to these compounds. With these vital functions, the search for sources has intensified worldwide. The biotechnological production of specific carotenoids, using bacteria, f

4. Effect of Melanin and Carotenoids of Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis on Phagocytosis, Oxidative Burst, and Killing by Human Neutrophils
The black yeast Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis is an increasingly recognized pathogen and a leading cause of severe pheohyphomycosis. Melanin is thought to contribute to the virulence of E. dermatitidis. Whereas the synthesis and the redox properties of melanin have been studied intensively, the influence of melanin and carotenoids on the phagocytosis, t

5. Metabolic Engineering of the Carotenoid Biosynthetic Pathway in the Yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous (Phaffia rhodozyma)
The crtYB locus was used as an integrative platform for the construction of specific carotenoid biosynthetic mutants in the astaxanthin-producing yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous. The crtYB gene of X. dendrorhous, encoding a chimeric carotenoid biosynthetic enzyme, could be inactivated by both single and double crossover events, resulting in non-carotenoi
